Q. Can I check for scoliosis at home?
Have your child bend forward 90 degrees and look at the back from behind. One side of the back or one shoulder blade standing higher is worth checking.
📝 Detailed Answer
This is called the Adams forward bend test. From standing, have the child bend forward about 90 degrees, then look along the back from behind, at hip level. A back that looks curved, or one shoulder blade or rib cage standing higher, can suggest scoliosis.
Other things to look at together:
- One shoulder looks higher in the mirror
- The belt line is tilted on one side of the pelvis
- Standing straight, the gap between arm and trunk differs left to right
- Shoe heels wear down unevenly
- The head always tilts to one side in photographs
- Lying flat, the arms or legs differ in length
- Bending forward, one side of the back and waist stands out
Three or more of these is worth having checked; six or more should be checked promptly.
