Q. Why does a hunched upper back develop?
The cause differs with age. In the growing years it is posture; from middle age onwards, degenerative change and osteoporosis are the main causes.
📝 Detailed Answer
We look at the causes separately.
- Growing years — poor posture is the largest cause. Pain in the thoracic spine, at the thoracolumbar junction and in the lumbar spine are the main symptoms
- From middle age — degenerative change in the spine alters the discs and the strength of the back muscles falls
- After menopause and in later life — it sometimes appears as a compression fracture from osteoporosis
Beyond these, there is also the path in which jaw joint balance is lost and the centre of gravity of the head moves forward, and the path in which the arch of the foot collapses, the pelvis tilts forward and the upper back rounds in compensation.
